Throughout our history health care has been an important part of our ministry. The Sisters of the Holy Spirit were one of the first in the Pittsburgh area to establish a home to care for the elderly, Bishop Boyle Home for Aged Women, located on the motherhouse grounds. The Bishop Boyle Home and Holy Ghost Guest Home in Allison Park, PA were operated by our community for over 50 years. Today, our sisters continue to staff Marian Manor in Pittsburgh, PA (near Greentree) which opened in 1956.
In February, 2008 the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and the Vincentian Sisters of Charity have brought their organizations together within one healthcare system which is the Vincentian Collaborative System, a multi-institutional long term care ministry operated by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
Times and circumstances have caused us to leave some of our health care facilities, but the influence of the Sisters and the Holy Spirit remains. For example, in Martinsburg, WV, where we once staffed the Kings Daughters Hospital and directed its school of nursing, we were able to pave the way for transforming the old hospital into a new congregate housing facility for the elderly.
